Personal project

Album Covers

When I first started using the adobe suite and started to practice with the different tools, I wanted to design album covers for my favourite music artists and tried to capture what they were saying in their music and portray that in an album cover. It helped my design thinking and it was a lot of fun doing something I felt passionate about.

Life after death, Biggie

I found this picture of Biggie online and I really liked the way that it represented his character and succuess as well as capturing the 90s period in terms of his style.

Being that he was such a big 90s artist I wanted to keep that style as much as possible with the colour and the font. I wanted to keep it simple because I wanted to direct attention to the photo.

Elephant, The White Stripes

I found the White Stripes really interesting due to their commitment to the red, white and black colour palette and the way that they made that work for their own album covers

Josef Müller-Brockmann was a big influence on my two White Stripes album covers and I designed these while researching him in Uni so I thought that it was a good way to merge my main two focusses at the time.

Icky Thump, The White Stripes

Once I did the cover for their Elephant album I wanted to do another because I really enjoyed it.

Again in the style of Josef Müller-Brockmann I tried to replicate a few things in terms of layout and position that he had done in his posters, I used a circle to replicate the drum kit and the inside the port hole I placed a silhouette of Jack and Meg White as an extra touch. I really like the way these covers turned out.

Anti, Rihanna

Rihanna's Anti album was great and I really liked the darker tone on the album and I thought it would be interesting to try and capture this and design an album cover for it.

I used purple becuae I thought that it was a powerful cover against the more muted colours in the image of Rihanna.

Astroworld, Travis Scott

Travis Scott's Astroworld was a colourful and vibrant albm that I really enjoyed and I wanted to make a cover that represented that

The colour and font of the typeface really represent the album and the image of Travis represents his character perfectly so I think it was a good combination.

Supervillain, MF Doom

MF Doom is an unusual artist that hasn't really received a large amount of fame but has more of a cult following.

I wanted a black and white photo to show the darkness and tone of some of his music but the more colourful and comic book style of the typeface because some of his music gives me that surreal comic book feeling.

Miseducation of Ms Lauryn Hill

One of the best hip hop albums ever the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is one of my favourite albums and I wanted to include it.

I designed this during a time where I was experimenting with fonts and what typefaces fit where and try grow my knowledge of different combinations of typefaces and I like the way that this one turned out.

Jay Z, 4:44

I am a massive fan of Jay Z and I was pleasently surprised when I heard the album because I hadn't heard such a self critical retrospective album from many hip hop artists and I really enjoyed listening to it.

I came to designing this cover knowing that the image I used was really important and I think that the image I chose represented the album really well.
